Harness racing is more popular in Canada than thoroughbred racing. Proof to that is the great number of harness racing tracks from the main cities (Ontario, Quebec, British Colombia) to the remotest areas of the country (Nova Scotia, Newfoundland).

Harness racing is also very popular in the U.S.A., Australia and New Zealand, as well as in many countries in Europe. Fans in the U.S. wager about $2.5 billion a year, while Canadian fans wager about $1 billion a year. Roughly 80% of the total money wagered is returned to the fans who wagered it.
